Research
The research activities of the Maastricht Heart + Vascular Center are brought together in the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM).
CARIM employs 180 researchers from 13 disciplines, about 120 PhD students, and 70 technical and support staff. Together, they are unravelling the mechanisms of heart and vascular diseases. With an annual budget of almost €22 million (2014), CARIM is one of Europe’s largest heart and vascular research institutes, producing more than 500 scientific articles and approximately 30 PhD dissertations per year.
In the last 10 years, CARIM papers have been published in high-impact journals such as Cell, JAMA, Nature Medicine, British Medical Journal, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation and Lancet Neurology. Bibliometric analyses (1997–2012/2013) show that publications from CARIM have been cited 1.97 times more often than the world average for the cardiovascular field in the period 2009–12.
