Werner Mess has been associated with the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at MUMC+ since 1997, and has been department head since 2006. 
Alongside his tasks in patient care, Werner Mess also has a teaching role. His scientific interests lie on the one hand in research into atherosclerosis of the arteries in the throat by means of ultrasound and on the other hand in the neuromonitoring during the performance of procedures on the large blood vessels.
Werner Mess is active in various national bodies and working groups such as the plenary visitation committee, the kernconsilium neurologicum (core consilium on neurology), the RGS (substitute member) and the Dutch neurovascular working group. He is a member of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Klinische Neurofysiologie (Dutch Association for Clinical Neurophysiology), the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Neurologie (Dutch Association for Neurology), the Neurosonology Research Group (of which he is also a member of the Executive Committee), the European Stroke Organisation, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ultraschall in der Medizin (German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine, DEGUM).
