He then completed a further specialization in cardio-vascular surgery at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. In 1993, he became head of vascular surgery at the Amsterdam University Medical Centre (AMC), and was appointed professor in 1995. In 2000, he moved to Maastricht to become Head of Surgery, and later Director of the Heart+Vascular Center. In 2005, he was also appointed professor and Head of Vascular Surgery at the Aachen University Medical Center (Germany). Since then, he has also been working across the border, i.e. in two university medical centres. Since 21 years, he organizes the annual European Vascular Course: a congress for vascular surgeons attending from over 50 countries worldwide. His key area of special concern is the treatment of complex conditions affecting the entire aorta in the thoracic and abdominal cavities. He maintains a wealth of partnership contacts in this area and is co-director of aorta centers in various cities, including Lisbon and London.
