Joanna Chikwe, faculty Maastricht Mitral Masters  

Joanna Chikwe, MD, FRCS, FACC studied medicine at Oxford University after spending two years in Florence, Italy studying art. She completed cardiac surgery residency training in the UK, and joined Mount Sinai Hospital in New York in 2006 eventually becoming Professor and Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai West. In 2019 Dr. Chikwe was recruited to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles as the inaugural Chairman of the Department of Cardiac Surgery. 
Dr. Chikwe is the Irina and George Schaeffer Distinguished Chair in Cardiac Surgery at the Smidt Heart Institute, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Her primary area of clinical expertise is robotic mitral repair and valve reconstruction.  She is Vice-Chair of the American Heart Association Methodological Standards in Randomized Trials in Cardiac Surgery, Vice-Chair of the American Heart Association Valvular Heart Disease Performance Measures Steering Group, and serves on the New York State Cardiac Advisory Committee, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Quality Gateway, the American College of Cardiology Shock Registry Steering Committee, the Mitral Valve Academic Research Consortium and the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery Mitral and Tricuspid Valve Taskforce. 
Dr. Chikwe’s research includes over 200 peer reviewed manuscripts and abstracts with publications in journals including NEJM, JAMA, and JACC.  She is clinical PI of the NIH sponsored pivotal randomized trial TRANscatheter repair or Surgery FOR 1er Mitral Regurgitation (TRANSFORM) with the Cardiothoracic Surgical Trials Network, and currently serves as an Associate Editor of JACC and the European Heart Journal, Deputy Editor of Annals of Thoracic Surgery; and on the editorial board of JTCVS.  
Dr. Chikwe was Program Director of one of the first 6-year integrated thoracic surgery residency programs in the US; developed the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Careers College to support diversity in cardiothoracic surgery, serves as Chair of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Adult Cardiac Education Committee, on the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Leadership Academy and is author of three textbooks in multiple editions.
