Maastricht UMC+ (MUMC+) is one of the Netherlands’ eight university medical centres. It provides top-level referral and clinical care to a large part of the southeast of the Netherlands. Together with Maastricht University, it delivers scientific education, conducts research and provides patient care. MUMC+ distinguishes itself from other university medical centres through its integrated healthcare approach, which focusses on risk stratification, the prevention of diseases, the promotion of healthy behaviour and the organisation of healthcare.
National and international reputation
MUMC+ has an outstanding national and international reputation in its profile, namely heart and vascular diseases, respiratory diseases, cancer, and neurological diseases. MUMC+ is also renowned for its medical specialities, such as ophthalmology (the study and treatment of disorders and diseases of the eye), movement, and hereditary conditions, reproduction & predisposition. The central innovation themes for the medical specialities and profile are healthcare innovation (including prevention, lifestyle, personalised health and smart technology), metabolism & nutrition, and operational excellence. MUMC+ attaches great importance to the integration of fundamental, translational and clinical research with top-level referral care and university education & training. The top-level referral functions of university medical centres are always related to research activities, but MUMC+’s profile are very strongly research-driven.
MUMC+’s social responsibility therefore covers the entire spectrum of the innovation chain. By carrying out fundamental research, MUMC+ generates knowledge, which it applies through translational and clinical research. That research enables MUMC+ to develop treatments, interventions and guidelines that contribute to healthy lifestyles. Through this innovation chain, MUMC+ creates value in addition to the direct economic effects such as intellectual property or cost-effective treatments. This value is mainly reflected in a healthier population. In cooperation with strategic partners at local, regional and international levels, MUMC+ is thus able to control and optimise the entire innovation chain – from molecule or gene, via mouse and lab, to the hospital bed.
